WHAT HAPPENED TO ME (AND MAYBE YOU TOO) WITHOUT A PLAN....

Before I began working in the field of Landscape Designing, I would go to the plant nursery and see all the beautiful flowers and greenery...buy about $100.00 worth for my garden and plant it where I thought it should go in the yard. It was of course all together, and looked grand; just like in the shopping cart!
It was beautiful and the neighbors would oh and ah over the color combinations...About a month later the flowers would fade and fall off...the greenery would begin to show tinges of yellowing and two months after planting the leaves would often turn black and fall to the ground. The worse part was explaining to my husband why I would spend so much money each season only to have the plantings die!

STUDYING AND AN  EYE  FOR CREATIVITY MAKE THE DIFFERENCE!
So I began to take classes and study on my own as well.....every place a book could be placed in the house, there was a gardening book....even in the kitchen! In classes, learned to draw and color landscape plantings. Adding the Master Gardener Extension Classes at OSU and WSU, adding in sustainability training, waste water management, living green and  working 4 years in plant nurseries; all helped improve my plant knowledge. With the Association of Landscape Designers education is continuing, we have 2 more years of business experience needed for national certification with APLD. So the combination of training and studying has proven itself.

I FOUND HAVING A PLAN, USING THE NEWLY ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ADDING CREATIVITY TO THE PLANTINGS MADE A INTERESTING  UNUSUAL  AND  SUCCESSFUL LANDSCAPE
....
Placement, soil, watering, fertilizing, wind tolerance, sun or shade factors, climate zones, contour of land, along with look of the mature plant all played a role in what I learned to do right. Knowing what will grow where; allowing for watering needs and correct nutrients; the right amounts of sun or shade requirements is more important than having a cart full of flowers and green that only look good for 1 month.

 A BUSINESS WAS FORMED.....
... as my gardening became more successful I began to help friends, then began a business in 2003, as Barr's Backyard and Country Gardens...closing that business as we moved North from Southern Oregon....I re-opened a newly created business in February of  2007 as Sue's Landscape Design.  We are currently in the middle of our 2nd year and have found offering  a design "SATISFACTION GUARANTEED" has brought more clients to greater success stories in their own gardens. References from previous clients is not a problem when they are satisfied. We delight in touring finished landscapes of our clients!
